A Picture of Jesus
I used to think of Jesus clothed in a white robe, clean and gentle, holding a lamb or something. The more I study what He is like, the more I realize that is not really an accurate picture. Definitely He is merciful and kind....but the picture is much more full than that. Revelation 1:14 describes his head and hair as white, like wool or snow, his eyes like flames of fire, and his feet like polished bronze.
I have been asking God to give me a mental picture of this for a while....months, really. I have always had my own picture that i fabricated from these words and my imagination, but recently, I received what I asked for.
I was running on my elliptical trainer, and talking to the Invisible God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, when for a moment, in my mind, I saw the one with eyes like fire! As soon as I saw Him, I realized I had a pretty weak idea of white!....
His hair was like lightning, blazing white. Electric white. His eyes were intense with passion, but He was smiling. But what got me most was what He had on. He had shining gold or bronze armor. It was brilliant and bright....I guess like polished brass or bronze, but over his armor was a breastplate filled with what must have been hundreds of small stones. The light from each of these stones shone out in brilliant color.
I realized from a lesson we had done in Club 609 for the kids in our church that what I was seeing was an "intercessors breastplate." This is what the Israelite priests would wear. The Jewish priests breastplate had twelve stones in it to represent the twelve tribes of Israel, whom they were praying for as priest.
In the few seconds I witnessed this "vision" I somehow knew one of those stones represented me. Jesus intercedes for me...and for you. The book of Hebrews says Jesus is a King, and a Priest, which really just means He owns it all, yet He intercedes on our behalf. We think of a priest as a revered person in the church, He thinks of a priest as a servant. He is the Ultimate King of Power who also chose to be the ultimate servant.
I guess my point is that He isn't frail and thin man wearing a clean white robe...
He has clothed Himself in garments of power and strength. He loves us and is coming soon to set things right. Don't be discouraged by the news. Don't be discouraged by the corruption and darkness you see all around. Isaiah saw this time we live in, and this is what He said:
(Isaiah 59:14-19) Our courts oppose the righteous, and justice is nowhere to be found. Truth stumbles in the streets, and honesty has been outlawed. Yes, truth is gone, and anyone who renounces evil is attacked. The LORD looked and was displeased to find there was no justice.
He was amazed to see that no one intervened to help the oppressed. So He Himself stepped in to save them with His strong arm, and His justice sustained Him. He put on righteousness as His body armor and placed the helmet of salvation on His head. He clothed Himself with a robe of vengeance and wrapped Himself in a cloak of divine passion.
He will repay His enemies for their evil deeds. His fury will fall on His foes. He will pay them back even to the ends of the earth. In the west, people will respect the name of the LORD; in the east, they will glorify Him. For He will come like a raging flood tide driven by the breath of the LORD.
