Light

Psalm 43:3 Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, To God my exceeding joy; And on the harp I will praise You, O God, my God.

God's light and truth emanate from His throne. God dwells in unapproachable bright light. His holiness, or wholly-other-than-ness is so bright. The light from the uncreated God shines brightly in creation.

God's words of truth, like thunder, and His light, filter through the emerald rainbow of mercy, and the intense red desire of His heart for me is communicated through the light He touches my heart with. This is the picture of His light He authored in Revelation 4.

His light is designed with purpose. His truth has a specific desire. To lead me closer to where He dwells. He saw me when He made Adam in the garden. He made me, and all who would choose Him, to be with Him. God with man is the theme of Genesis, the theme of the Gospels, and the end of the story. His light and His truth are sent to lead me home, to where He is...to His tabernacle.

Thanksgiving, or giving thanks, returns me to the path His light is illuminating. Remembering what He has done draws me back into the light when I have wandered astray.

The enemy of my soul whispers in the darkness "to the right the water tastes better. Take another step and see." Or "freedom from the path is what you need. Look at the vastness of woods. You can find your own way." There is an evil one who would keep me from the source of light. There is one who whispers darkness, pretending to be a light. Thanksgiving breaks the power of that whisper!

Thanksgiving draws me back to the path of light I was on. Thanksgiving requires no faith, only an honest memory.

God's light and His truth are the path, and are more visible when I am already walking in them, when I am already on the path. If you have ever walked a narrow trail in the woods, you know what I mean. When you leave the path, no longer do you see where it was leading, the path itself becomes invisible. Thanksgiving is like retracing your steps back to the trail. Once I am on it again, I can begin moving closer to the destination.

The power in thanksgiving is that, when I'm drawn back to the path of light and truth, I can look forward to the next step toward the place my beloved dwells.

God glories in my forward movement. He longs to draw me deeper and deeper, closer to the destination. Once thanksgiving has reset my direction again. Faith can call me nearer, step by step. Faith is really thanksgiving for the future...it is thanksgiving for what is promised by the Keeper of Promises! Being sure of what I hope for.

When I let thanksgiving remind me of the promises God has already kept, faith seems like the only reasonable response going forward. When I let the whispers from the enemy dull my memory of the promises already kept, faith seems like a stretch.

I want to reach the destination. Along the way, this requires thanksgiving. There is no such thing as too much thanksgiving! When I get to my destination, I will see an alter where I can offer my praise and thanks before my exceeding joy who continually beckoned me home with His light and truth, always returning me to the path with the gift of thanksgiving.

God, please use thanksgiving to draw me back to the light and truth today!

Psalm 92:1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; 2 To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night, 3 On an instrument of ten strings, On the lute, And on the harp, With harmonious sound. 4 For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. 5 O Lord, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep. 6 A senseless man does not know, Nor does a fool understand this. 7 When the wicked spring up like grass, And when all the workers of iniquity flourish, It is that they may be destroyed forever. 8 But You, Lord, are on high forevermore. 9 For behold, Your enemies, O Lord, For behold, Your enemies shall perish; All the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. 10 But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil. 11 My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies; My ears hear my desire on the wicked Who rise up against me. 12 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Those who are planted in the house of the Lord Shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing, 15 To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
