Humility in Success

David knew that it was God who had given him success. This led him to a place of humility, where he valued the power of God operating in his life more than the ability to manipulate his circumstances or take advantage of circumstances to gain the upper hand.

The power of God to establish David was the "anointing" on him. Saul was anointed for the same task before David was, but did not value his anointing like David did. Saul tried to manipulate circumstances to His favor, despite what God was clearly doing in David's life. Saul didn't value David's anointing, because He really didn't value his own:

I Samuel 24:2-6 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the Rocks of the Wild Goats. So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to attend to his needs. ( David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.) Then the men of David said to him, “This is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it seems good to you.’ ” And David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. Now it happened afterward that David’s heart troubled him because he had cut Saul’s robe. And he said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord's anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord .”

If you truly believe that God is the one empowering you...If you truly value the anointing operating in your own life, then you will recognize it operating in other people's lives, even as those people resist you! This is a powerful expression of humility.

David wasn't pretending Saul had good motives or character...or even calling or ability....He was simply humble enough to value what God was doing, even through an evil king who was opposed to God and out to get David. David was unwilling to interrupt what God was doing, because He valued God's anointing in His own life.

This resulted in David growing in his own anointing as he took his place as king in Hebron, and later in Jerusalem.

II Samuel 2:1-4 It happened after this that David inquired of the Lord , saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.” So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. And David brought up the men who were with him, every man with his household. So they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were the ones who buried Saul.”

David grew in anointing, and was literally anointed to be king on three separate occasions, because he so highly valued the anointing....even resting on others who did not value it themselves.

Everyone gets what they want. If you want to value God's anointing, God's anointing will become more valuable for you!
