You Get What You Want
The accusation against God is often that He is holding back some "good" thing from someone. Why would God make me wait so long? Why does success never come? Why don't I get to have what everyone else has?
The truth is, everyone gets what they want with God, He is just faithful to give us to time figure out if we REALLY want that thing we think will fix our life. God knows that children often want things they think are good for them. Often, the thing desired in immaturity will really ruin a kids appetite for the thing that IS really good for them. Or, worse yet, sometimes a kid wants something that would actually hurt them.
God has built in a "delay" to giving some things in order to give us time to see it is not really the highest and best in our lives. Some people push through that delay with desire...unholy desire that does not agree with God's better design. This isn't limited to sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Sometimes we want a higher position in life we aren't ready for, or more money that would actually spark less reliance on the one shaping us in this season...there are many seemingly "good" things that are not good for us right now. It is a dreadful thing to be given the thing you convinced yourself you must have, only to find out it does not bring life like you thought it would:
Psalms 106:13-15 They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel, But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tested God in the desert. And He gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul.
Often what we want looks good to the emotions, but is the very thing that will bring emptiness...dullness...to our soul. I want a bright and vibrant soul....I want fullness in my heart, even if it is hard on my flesh for a minute.
A person is mind, soul (mind, will, emotion), and body. When a person comes into a saving knowledge of Jesus, their spirit is made completely new. If you are saved by the Blood of Jesus, your spirit is the dwelling place of God. It will never be more holy than perfectly holy! Someday, your body, which can be fed or denied right now, will be made brand new either way...
What is left is your soul, also called your heart. God will never violate free will, because He will never violate love. He doesn't force anyone to get renewed. How renewed your heart gets (sanctification) is completely up to you. If you choose to let your soul (heart) wallow in leanness because you only had desire to satisfy your appetites, then forever your heart will exist in leanness. But, if you desire to be made completely new, you can have that, too!
We let Jesus make our heart new by coming into agreement with Him about what is really good, and then desiring that, instead of what the world is working overtime to distract us with. Jesus said that agreeing with Him is a burden and a yoke. His burden is light and His yoke is easy....but it is still a burden and a yoke.
Everyone is carrying a burden and wearing a yoke. Jesus' yoke is MUCH different than the world's. The world wants a yoke that is easy on the flesh...a burden that looks light right NOW! But the world's yoke is hard on our hearts...robbing them of everything they will need forever...in trillions of years, my current body will be long gone...but my heart will still be mine.
Jesus' yoke is a little harder on the flesh for a minute, but it prepares my heart to flourish for trillions and trillions...and trillions...trillions...of years.
The more I wear Jesus yoke, I find out it makes my heart SOAR in vibrant connection to the source of life. I've never been more alive, because I am desiring to live with the one who designed life, and He answers that desire quickly!
Everyone gets what they want!
James 4:1-10 What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure. You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. What do you think the Scriptures mean when they say that the spirit God has placed within us is filled with envy? But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
