Faith Like a Mustard Seed
Matthew 17:20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
A mustard seed is the most incredible analogy that Jesus could use to describe a level of faith.
All of the DNA of the mustard tree is contained in the seed. The blueprints of the tree, everything that makes the tree a tree is ALREADY in the tiniest little seed.
The faith a mustard seed has is that it IS a mustard tree. It doesn't believe it is anything other than what it is. Even though they are alive, seeds don't really do anything to be anything else...that's the point! They simply are what they will be...wherever God places them...whatever God gives...whenever God gives...they receive, as they receive, they become. A mustard seed simply stays in its destiny to be a mustard tree....it might not know how, or when, but its destiny is to be that tree.
A mustard seed is only 1-2 mm in diameter, yet a mustard tree or bush can grow up to 30 feet tall, all 30 feet of tree is already in the seed...no water, food, soil, or air can add any more "treeness" to what is in the seed already.
This is what Jesus calls us to: a faith that is sure of what we will be. If we really believed in who we were made to be we would quickly see that we weren't just made to be saved by Jesus, we were made to be ONE with Jesus...as He is, so we are made to be.
John 14:12-14 "I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. (13) You can ask for anything in My name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. (14) Yes, ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it!
John 17:21-26 I pray that they will all be one, just as You and I are one—as You are in Me, Father, and I am in You. And may they be in Us so that the world will believe You sent Me. (22) "I have given them the glory You gave Me, so they may be one as We are one. (23) I am in them and You are in Me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that You sent Me and that You love them as much as You love Me. (24) Father, I want these whom You have given Me to be with Me where I am. Then they can see all the glory You gave Me because You loved Me even before the world began! (25) "O righteous Father, the world doesn't know You, but I do; and these disciples know You sent Me. (26) I have revealed You to them, and I will continue to do so. Then Your love for Me will be in them, and I will be in them."
All of that is already inside of you. Can you believe that? If you are like everyone else, then not without some help from God. That is the point of repentance. When I give in in my mind to fears that I am NOT all that, those fears move me to do things in my own strength to cover a perceived lack. This fights against my destiny already formed on the day I was conceived. This is what makes repentance so powerful...it brings me back to my weakness...which is actually my strength. My dependency on God opens me to receive from Him...as I receive I grow...I become.
Jesus isn't asking you to "will" anything move except your heart. If you let that happen, He will move everything else by the Spirit.
Zechariah 4:6 Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 7 Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’”
That is the faith of the Bible: Believing He is who he says He is, and that you are who He says you are.
Matthew 13:31 Here is another illustration Jesus used: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches.”
