The Fourth Beast of Daniel 7 (Part 4- Final Installment)
The book of Daniel is one of the most specific prophecies in the Bible, naming numbers of years, specific places, and specific kingdoms. Daniel was given specific military movements hundreds and thousands of years in advance. In fact, the main criticism of the Book of Daniel centered on how extravagantly accurate it is! Many said there is no way it was written in advance of the events leading up to the appearance of Jesus, because it was simply too accurate. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Qumran in 1946 put to rest any doubt that the Book of Daniel was written well in advance of many of the events it accurately foretold.
Daniel was given a vision of global empires that would control Babylon. It is important to note, when examining Daniel, that the visions given specifically regarded world superpowers that would control Babylon, unlike the parallel vision of world superpowers that would be bent on controlling Jerusalem given to John the beloved in the Book of Revelation. Joel Richardson has written a great book called Mideast Beast that demonstrates well the difference.
Daniel was given two confirming visions that supported each other. Specifically, the vision in Daniel 7 confirmed the first dream that Daniel interpreted for Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2. Both dreams concerned the same global empires which would succeed Nebuchadnezzar, who was a ruler in Babylon. For an empire to “succeed” Nebuchadnezzar, it would have to control at least the same territory he did:
Daniel 2:36-46 "This is the dream. Now we will tell the interpretation of it before the king. (37) You, O king, are a king of kings. For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory; (38) and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all—you are this head of gold.
(39) But after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to yours; then another, a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth.
(40) And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. (41) Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. (42) And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. (43) As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.
(44) And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. (45) Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure." (46) Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, prostrate before Daniel, and commanded that they should present an offering and incense to him.
So, the dream involved four kingdoms…world empires…superpowers… which would successively control Babylon. They started with Nebuchadnezzar, the head of gold; then the second Kingdom, the Medes and Persians; then the third kingdom Alexander the Great’s Greece. All of these superpowers (the largest empire on earth at the time they existed) controlled the physical territory Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar’s base of operations.
Specific insight was given to Daniel about the fourth kingdom, which is much different than the others. First of all, it was depicted with two legs. Many, for centuries have attributed this to the Roman Empire and its eastern and western divisions, ruled from Rome and Constantinople, respectively. However, the Roman Empire NEVER controlled Babylon. Rome, certainly a superpower, never succeeded Nebuchadnezzar. According to history, and more accurately fitting the specifics of the prophecy, the legs of Iron…the fourth superpower to historically control Babylon, is the Islamic Caliphate, which succeeded Rome in world dominance and ultimately became known as the Ottoman Empire, which ruled the area from the 7th Century until World War I.
This brings us to the confirming vision Daniel was given in Daniel 7. Here Daniel has a dream of His own about the same successive empires. We don’t need to wonder what it means, because again, the Bible tells us exactly what it means:
Daniel 7:3-8 And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other. (4) The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings. I watched till its wings were plucked off; and it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man, and a man's heart was given to it. (Nebuchadnezzar, who ultimately became converted and gave glory to God)
(5) "And suddenly another beast, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. And they said thus to it: 'Arise, devour much flesh!' (Medo-Persia)
(6) "After this I looked, and there was another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it. (Alexander the Great of Greece, who conquered the entire known world in approximately 8 years and was split into four regional empires when Alexander died)
(7) "After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. (8) I was considering the horns, and there was another horn, a little one, coming up among them, before whom three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots. And there, in this horn, were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.
This fourth beast is the same as the one with legs and feet of iron and toes of “iron mixed with clay.” The 10 toes are also 10 horns in the Daniel 7 passage. This beast, the Islamic Caliphate, is much different than the beasts that came before. We know from the current Islamic Brotherhood, a living remnant of the Islamic Caliphate, whose sole purpose as stated in their charter is to revive the Islamic Caliphate, as well as from the history of the Ottoman Empire, that Islamic Caliphates try to erase any previous cultural history wherever they go. They change the laws to Islamic laws (Sharia Law), excavate out any previous trace of religion and culture (like in Jerusalem), and demand conversion, slavery, or death. For them, there is only one god, and jihad is his way. This is the “a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet…”
An Islamic Caliphate is CLEARLY the fourth beast of Daniel 7, and the legs and feet of iron in Daniel 2. I say clearly, not simply because of the history and nature of the Islamic Caliphate, but because this was demonstrated to John in a way that ruled out any other contenders. What we find out from John’s vision is that the more important distinction in Nebuchadnezzar’s statue is not the two legs, but the legs extending into the feet and toes. We find out from the vision John was given in Revelation that the 4th beast of Daniel is actually the seventh head of the beast in Revelation, which dies and then comes back to life!
Revelation 13:1-3 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having SEVEN heads and TEN horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. (2) Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard (Greece, from Daniel’s visions), his feet were like the feet of a bear (Medo-Persia), and his mouth like the mouth of a lion (Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon). The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. (3) And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast.
Revelation 17:3 So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Revelation 17:9-13 "Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. (10) There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time. (11) The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition. (12) "The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. (13) These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast.
Here, John is shown the same superpowers Daniel was given, but, as John’s vision was not regarding Babylon, but rather, Jerusalem, he was shown a bigger picture. John was shown all the superpowers that would seek to dominate Jerusalem, and God’s Holy Mountain. The seven heads shown to John are those superpowers, four of which were the same shown to Daniel…the four which ALSO dominated Babylon: Egypt (fallen), Assyria (fallen), Babylon (fallen), Medo-Persia (fallen), Greece (fallen), Rome (the one that “is” when John was given the vision), the Islamic Caliphate (the one to come). The eighth one is “of the seven”…a superpower bent on controlling Jerusalem. This is the one who was mortally wounded (stopped existing), but resurrected…the revived Caliphate.
As I write this, the Muslim Brotherhood, established shortly after the fall of the Ottoman empire in 1920, is making huge strides in re-establishing itself in the middle east. What is VERY concerning is that the United States is ACTIVELY supporting the Muslim Brotherhood…who have become a strange partner with the US in establishing “democracy” (read “Islamic theocracy”…or Caliphate) in the Middle East. This is as strange as iron and clay mixing together. For right now, we see radical left-leaning progressive politicians…those in favor of gay marriage and abortion and liberal social agendas, and claiming to be anti-war MIXING with hard-line jihadists, bent on ridding the world of homosexuals, outlawing abortion, covering women from head to toe so they cannot be seen in public…hmm…something seems a bit odd about that!
Even more dramatically improbable is what Daniel and John were told about the 10 horns. The 10 horns are 10 kings…10 regional leaders who don’t have a global reach…yet, they need another guy that can propel them into the global sphere…but there is an 11th, too. A little guy, different from the rest. He speaks pompous words, and he comes up AFTER the other 10…he is from a much younger place. Then he single-handedly does the most improbable thing: he joins forces with the 10 that hate his country. All of them use each other to advance their own agendas. But wait a second, three of these guys have got to go. Don’t worry, the pompous guy has the plan and resources to uproot three of the regional leaders to make the program work!
Daniel 7:19-20 "Then I wished to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its nails of bronze, which devoured, broke in pieces, and trampled the residue with its feet; (20) and the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, before which three fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth which spoke pompous words, whose appearance was greater than his fellows.
Daniel 7:23-25 "Thus he said: 'The fourth beast shall be A fourth kingdom on earth, Which shall be different from all other kingdoms, And shall devour the whole earth, Trample it and break it in pieces. (24) The ten horns are ten kings Who shall arise from this kingdom. And another shall rise after them; He shall be different from the first ones, And shall subdue three kings. (25) He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High, And shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand For a time and times and half a time.
But hang on, John got even more information about these same guys. Remember, the harlot is the country that the 11th pompous guy represents. She is rich and distracted by her own perversion and luxury:
Revelation 17:12 "The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast.
Revelation 17:16 And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire.
Revelation 17:17 For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.
Revelation 17:18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth."
Ok…all the pieces are in place. Let’s put it all together, because this is the MOST IMPROBABLE set of circumstances. If one were to see this emerge in the earth, it would be TRULY worth noting, because the likelihood of this happening 2x is ASTRONOMICAL…better pay close attention to it the first time it happens. Here we go:
One guy (the 11th horn, also called the beast) aligns with 10 other middle-eastern Islamic countries that agree with the restoration of the 7th world superpower bent on controlling Israel, called an Islamic Caliphate. Three of the countries are essential to the plan, but they have leaders that go against the grain of the other Islamic countries. The 11th guy, Mr. Pompous Words, secretly and not so secretly conspires with the others, they get rid of the three sticks-in-the-mud (imagine a situation much like Egypt, Libya, and soon Syria all having “revolutions” and getting all new Islamic governments at the hand of one group, like the Islamic Brotherhood), and then the 11th guy, who the whole time pretends to be a friend of Israel, asserts pressure on Israel to make a peace treaty with them all. That would be unlikely enough…one guy getting rid of three kings without causing world war three. But this is the statistically impossible part:
The 10 kings HATE the country the 11th king represents, but they still give their authority to him, and he, even though he is arrogant beyond belief and his country is the exact opposite of them, shares power with them…
Kind of like iron and clay don’t mix…because the 11th guy’s country is the wealthiest country ever, and these 10 kings feel like it has corrupted the world with the luxury and perversion it has been exporting for years… which, according to God, it has! It is the “great city” which rules over the kings of the earth. Well, that is about as weird as jihadists, who want to spread intolerant Islam in the form of a revived Islamic Caliphate over the whole earth, being in the same tent as those who want to promote an LGBT agenda…
