One Desire
Psalms 69:9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
The house David was talking about was the space where God dwells. When I used to read this passage, my mind would land on "church." What David was describing was much bigger than wanting to "go to Church."
David had one desire:
Psalms 27:4 One thing I have desired of the Lord , That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord , And to inquire in His temple.
The temple David had in mind was the real one in heaven full of the Glory of God, angels, people, Jesus...light and sound...thunder and lightning...day and night worship...declarations of the beautiful God being released verbally over creation. David was saying "earth agreeing with heaven...me reaching for you because you reach for me...THIS has consumed me."
When Jesus took a look at what the temple had become, He felt the same way as David. Zeal for earth agreeing with heaven in non-stop worship consumes God, too!
John 2:13-17 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.”
Matthew described it like this:
Matthew 21:12-13 Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”
The Church...big C...is supposed to be consumed with zeal for this same thing. Whole hearted, all-in, consumed with zeal, let the chips fall where they may love for the Lord and loyalty to what He says He is about. This is what Jesus said it is all about:
Mark 12:28-30 Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
On earth, this starts with following the man after God's own heart...if I want to love whole hearted, I want to know the heart of the object of my love...i want to love in His language. When He holds up a standard of His heart, I want to pay attention!
I Samuel 13:14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
David poured all of his resources into duplicating the worship around God's throne in heaven on earth...agreeing on earth with heaven about what is most important...God...the source of all life!
I Chronicles 22:14 Indeed I have taken much trouble to prepare for the house of the Lord one hundred thousand talents of gold and one million talents of silver, and bronze and iron beyond measure, for it is so abundant. I have prepared timber and stone also, and you may add to them.
The king and commander of Israel even put his energy toward making harps and drums and cymbals so that the music and worship would never stop, just like in heaven!
I Chronicles 23:5 four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand praised the Lord with musical instruments, “which I made,” said David, “for giving praise.”
Zeal for this House...the night and day worship movement that God showed David how to start, consumed David, because He knew that it was what God wanted...it wasn't for man, but FOR GOD!
I Chronicles 29:1-2 Furthermore King David said to all the assembly: “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced; and the work is great, because the temple is not for man but for the Lord God. Now for the house of my God I have prepared with all my might: gold for things to be made of gold, silver for things of silver, bronze for things of bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood, onyx stones, stones to be set, glistening stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and marble slabs in abundance.
This is what Jesus said to pray for: that what happens in heaven would be on earth, too!
Luke 11:2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
In heaven: Revelation 4:8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”
On earth: I Chronicles 9:33 These are the singers, heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites, who lodged in the chambers, and were free from other duties; for they were employed in that work day and night.
This is what David said was his main mission...to make this reality permanent...to move it from a tent to the temple. To build the House on earth that is currently in heaven. THIS is the what he had zeal for...this is what ate him up! Jesus said this same zeal will precede His return:
Luke 18:7-8 And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”
Jesus said He will avenge those with zeal for day and night...but then God asked "how many will pick zeal for that?" I want to have zeal for what God says He has zeal for. If it is a good enough cause for the man after God's heart, and the Man Christ Jesus...if it is what will precede His very coming in glory...I want it to be what I am all about!
Let zeal for your House consume your Bride, Jesus! Let it not be "another thing" I do...but let agreeing with you about night and day worship and prayer be my primary source of strength...let the evangelism, the missions, the service, the Sunday morning gathering, the ministry, the deliverance all flow out of the night and day prayer in our city...let the worship and the prayer lead the way...just like in David's day!
Psalms 27:4-11 One thing I have desired of the Lord , That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord , And to inquire in His temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord . Hear, O Lord , when I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When You said, “Seek My face,” My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord , I will seek.” Do not hide Your face from me; Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation. When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me. Teach me Your way, O Lord , And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.
